When
the Apache opened in 1932 it was the finest hotel and casino in Las Vegas. It was
the first hotel to have air conditioning and an elevator. The Apache
Casino closed in 1941 and the property had several different names including
Western Casino, El
Dorado, Clover Club, & S. S. Rex.
In 1946 Benny Binion came to Las Vegas. The following
year he became a partner in the Las Vegas Club. It did not take him long
to leave the Las Vegas Club because he was upset they would not take large
bets.
Binion wanted big action so he bought the Apache property in 1951 and opened the
Horseshoe Casino which would take any size bet. In 1970 the Horseshoe
hosted the first World Series of Poker. If you have ever been inside the World Famous Horseshoe than
you were also in the Apache Casino.
